Description: 3/4 m. S. of church, Godalming. Looking S. Method of quarrying Bargate Stone. Shacksted Lane quarry. Doggers of calcareous sandstone in the Bargate Beds are levered out by a long crowbar on which extra leverage is obtained by means of a plank placed at right-angles to the bar with one end on the ground. On this plank quarrymen stand and jump in unison, balancing themselves by long poles.
