| Description: | Looking south-east at Barnby Bridge opencast site, 500 yd. N. 42 degrees W. Barnby Bridge. Drainage box-cut on opencast coal site. On this site large quantities of water broke from the black shale above the Flockton Coal and interfered with working along the strike. The water was managed by cutting a trench down dip to collect the water which is being pumped from the far end of the box-cut. The coal rests on clay and has an overburden of 12 ft. of black shales with ironstone bands, overlain by bands of sandstone and shale totalling another 10 ft. The Flockton Thick Coal, the most important of the two Flockton coals is usually identified by the overlying Tankersley Ironstone. It occurs as two beds a lower about one foot thick and an upper about two feet thick separated by 3 to 4 feet of dirt. |
