| Description: | The sample is a single cubic crystal of pyrite. It has a dark tarnished colour due to oxidation of the outer surface of the mineral. British Geological Survey Petrology Mineral Collection sample number 420. The presence of secondary iron oxide minerals on the surface of the pyrite produces a variable orange and yellow coloration. Pyrite is a mineral composed of iron sulphide and belongs to the cubic crystal system. It is a very hard but fragile mineral with poor cleavage, usually fairly dark yellow with a bright metallic lustre. It can form excellent crystals or occur in compact masses and granular aggregates. It also occurs as concretions, mammilated or stalactitic nodules. This specimen is from Meall nan Tarmachan, near Ben Lawers. It occurs in a wide range of environments; plutonic, volcanic, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, in the latter it is stable up to granulite facies where it changes into pyrrhotite. |
