Description: Cliff section, about 1/4 m. SE of Atherfield Point, Chale Bay. Looking NW. The Crackers Group of the Lower Greensand, near Atherfield. The descending sequence in the cliffs is: Lower Gryphaea Beds, 33 ft. Upper Lobster Bed, 40 ft. Crackers Rock, 20 ft., showing band of fossiliferous concretions above the caves. The name 'Crackers' refers to the series of detonations made by the waves striking the hollowed base of the cliff. Ref: 'A short account of the geology of the Isle of Wight', pp. 26-28.
