Description: | Cliffs Between Little Stairs Point and Sandown, from foreshore, Sandown Bay. Looking N. Lower Greensand at Little Stairs, near Shanklin. Lower end of Little Stairs on the left. Lake Stairs or Slipway below the houses on the right. The cliff is in the Middle Beds of the Ferruginous Sands, capped by thin Plateau Gravel and stony Brickearth. The sands dip to the left, at a decreasing angle, and become horizontal at Little Stairs, where a bed containing numerous moulds of Exogyra sinuata J.Sow. (probably Dr.Fitton's 'Upper Gryphaea Group') appears half-way up the cliff. Chalybeate water issues along the dark band at foot of cliff near middle of view, cementing pebbles and sand on shore. |
