| Description: | In the foreground and to the right, the heather-covered slopes are developed on Upper Greensand of Cretaceous age, decalcified glauconitic sands which support very poor light soil. The shelf visible within the Upper Greensand slope (centre, foreground), is caused by a resistant pebble band within the succession of sands. The distant farmland is developed on the rich soils of the Teignmouth Breccias, while in the wooded and bracken-covered area of the left foreground the breccias are overlain by head derived from the Upper Greensand. Note the distinct change of slope at the base of the Greensand, caused by recession of the base due to spring sapping. In the distance is Great Haldon, where gently folded Eocene Haldon Gravels rest on the Greensand, as on Little Haldon. In the extreme foreground the earth bank is made of flinty head, derived from the Haldon Gravels, which overlies the Greensand. |
