Description: A rock dredge sampling device on deck during exploration by the Institute of Geological Sciences, offshore Scotland. A rock dredge is a crude device for gathering information on the nature of rocky areas. It is an armoured ?net? which is dragged along the sea bed, gathering boulders and fragments of bedrock. The types of rock recovered provide information on the type and ages of the bedrock in the vicinity. Devices are required to recover samples of the bedrock so that geological maps can be made.
