| Description: | Paleofavosites is a tabulate coral that lived during Ordovician and Silurian times. It is often found in shallow water limestones (including bioherms) and calcareous shales. It has a wide geographical distribution, being present in Europe, Asia, Australia and North America. Paleofavosites rugosus has thin-walled polygonal corallites and small pores may be present in the walls. A stack of thin, horizontal tabulae is present. The specimen illustrated, which comes from Silurian limestones of Gloucestershire, shows the polygonal ends of the corallites. Unlike rugose corals, tabulate corals have a simple corallum. The corallites form as a cluster of long slender tubes. They are built up with a stack of tabulae (corallite floors), but there are no septa or dissepiments. They are all colonial in form. |
