Description: Pumpherston Oil Works, Drumshoreland. Midlothian. Tip heaps or 'bings' of spent oil-shale. The spent oil-shale consists of red burnt mudstone and siltstone fragments which are known locally as 'blaes' or 'red blaes'. This material is inert and compacts well to give a firm base for roads, motorways and industrial sites.
