Caption: Forties production platform at dusk.
Description: Forties production platform at dusk. The Forties oil field is located in Block 21/10 in the northern North Sea. This is one of the production platforms. It is viewed at dusk, and gives a good view of the flares. This was the simplest, cheapest and often the safest method of disposing of unwanted gas collected as a by-product of extraction and processing of oil. Large reserves of oil and gas were discovered in the northern North Sea. Platforms were installed in the fields to extract the hydrocarbons from the subsurface and pump them via pipelines to the shore.
