Description: | Hown's Quarry, Consett. Hown's Sandstone Quarry, Consett. Old quarry in c. 21 m. (70 ft.) sandstone of Westphalian A (Lower Coal Measures) age and below the horizon of the Victoria Coal. Only a portion of the tree-filled lower half is seen at the bottom. When the overburden became too great the stone was quarried in galleries cut into the upper half of the sandstone. Much of Consett was built out of this stone. The quarries have been disused since the turn of the century (see also Photos L1748 - L1750). |
