Description: | Linlithgow Palace, birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots. From the north-east shore of Linlithgow Loch. Looking south-west. The palace is situated on a promontory on the south side of Linlithgow Loch. The underlying rocks are basaltic lavas of the Bathgate Hills Volcanic Formation. The loch is probably a kettle hole, located over a former drift-filled channel of the River Avon. A kettle hole is a depression in the surface of glacial drift resulting from the melting of a large lump of ice, in the drift. The scene is one of stagnant glacier ice melting in situ. |
