Description: | Oblique aerial view of Ben Cruachan and the hydro dam holding back a reservoir for the pumped storage scheme, Highland Region. The 'Ben Cruachan Granite' is the second phase of the Etive Complex, an elliptical composite pluton with three distinct phases. Here at Ben Cruachan the 'granite' is a monzodiorite, a heterogeneous, medium to fine-grained rock containing zoned plagioclase phenocrysts with interstitial quartz, feldspar, biotite and rarely hornblende. It is cut by irregular sheets and ring dykes of the Starav Granite. The intrusions are part of the Argyll Group of post-tectonic Caledonian granitic intrusions and represent the main phase of igneous activity in the Grampian Highlands. Large volumes of calc-alkaline magmas were intruded during a period of post-orogenic uplift following the Caledonian Orogeny. |
