Caption: Photomicrograph of sandstone from Blaxter Quarry, Elsdon, Otterburn, Northumberland, England
Description: The image is part of a thin section of sandstone impregnated with blue dye resin in order to highlight the porosity in the rock. The specimen is of Carboniferous age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 7333. The sandstone shows a relatively variable grain size, and different mineral components. It is dominated by grains of quartz and feldspar, with less common dark iron oxide or carbonaceous material, and very small clay minerals. Blaxter sandstone can be seen in the striking National Library of Scotland on George IV Bridge in Edinburgh (1937-55) where the rusticated Blaxter sandstone is set against a grey Creetown granite from south-west Scotland. It is used in many buildings around Edinburgh, including the Grant Institute of Geology at the King's Buildings of the University of Edinburgh, which was constructed in 1930-31.
