Caption: Photomicrograph of sandstone from Dunhouse Quarry, Staindrop, County Durham, England
Description: The image is part of a thin section taken using a relatively low-power lens in order to show the grain structure and texture of the rock. The specimen is of Carboniferous age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 7334. The sandstone is dominated by grains of clear quartz and feldspar, with darker brown coloured iron oxides throughout. Porosity is highlighted by the presence of blue dyed resin in the thin section. Dunhouse quarry is situated near Staindrop, west of Darlington in County Durham. It has been worked since the early 1900s and has been in the hands of the present owners since 1933. The sandstone is from the Upper Carboniferous Millstone Grit and is a generally a fine-grained, buff coloured stone. The stone has proved popular for repairs and restoration work in Edinburgh, such as Nos. 1-8 Atholl Crescent (1882-84) and Canning Street (1985). Between 1989 and 1991, 2300 cubic feet of Dunhouse stone was used for restoration and repairs to the Balmoral Hotel (formerly the North British Hotel), mainly on the east and west elevations and in restoring the cornice of the clock tower.
