Description: | Chiddingly Wood, West Hoathly. Looking NE. Unusual weathering feature in Ardingly Sandstone. Groundwater percolating through the massive sandstone initiates lines of weathering along softer, more silty, less permeable beds. This differential erosion is later modified by a combination of frost action and further groundwater seepage to produce the unusual colonnade-like features shown in the photograph. |
