Description: Sample of Hopetoun sandstone from the building stone collection of the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust. The stone has a cut surface with a very pale buff-orange colour. Sandstone from Hopetoun was used in the construction of the Edinburgh New Town. Edinburgh World Heritage Trust sample no. EWHT 30. Hopetoun stone is known to be a relatively pure, hard and compact building stone, sometimes known as 'Hopetoun White'. The stone is from the Binny Sandstone of the Carboniferous West Lothian Oil-Shale Formation.
