Caption: | Photomicrograph of sandstone, England |
Description: | The image is a photomicrograph of part of a thin section of sandstone viewed in order to highlight the different mineral components present in the rock. The specimen is of Carboniferous age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 6194. The sample is a sandstone dominated by grains of quartz and feldspar which appear white in thin section. The grains appear relatively spaced out and many are not in contact, indicating that the rock is not strongly compacted or cemented. This has resulted in a relatively high porosity, as seen by the abundance of blue dye resin in the image. Some dark opaque grains of iron oxide are present. Some of the feldspar grains have undergone alteration and partial dissolution, resulting in a skeletal appearance. The presence of iron oxide grains in a sandstone may result in the stone having a stronger colour. It commonly appears as spots of orange or brown grains which result in an overall 'speckled' appearance to the stone. |
