Caption: | Photomicrograph of sandstone from Watts Cliff Quarry, Matlock, Derbyshire, England |
Description: | The image is a photomicrograph of part of a thin section of sandstone viewed under a relatively low-power lens in order to show the variable grain size present in the rock. The specimen is of Carboniferous age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 5848. The sample is a poorly sorted sandstone consisting of a wide range of grain sizes of mainly quartz and feldspar. In addition, the grains are not well rounded and have a rather angular shape. The rock has a moderate porosity highlighted by the presence of blue dye resin which has been impregnated into the sandstone during the preparation of the thin section. The opaque black patches scattered throughout are iron oxide minerals. Wattscliffe Lilac stone is increasingly used in the Edinburgh area as a substitute for rubble stone which is no longer available, such as Craigmillar stone. |
