Caption: Photomicrograph of sandstone from Springwell Quarry, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England
Description: The image is a photomicrograph of part of a thin section of Springwell sandstone viewed in order to show the grain structure of the rock. The specimen is of Carboniferous age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number MC 6194. The sample is a sandstone dominated by quartz grains which appear white in thin section. These are of varying sizes and shapes, but are mostly sub-rounded in outline. The presence of porosity in the rock is highlighted by blue dye resin which has been impregnated into the thin section. Iron oxide minerals infill parts of the porosity, easily distinguished by their opaque (black) appearance. A small amount of mica is also present in the sandstone. It has a characteristic yellow-brown colour suggesting it is an iron or magnesium-bearing variety such as biotite or chlorite.
