Caption: | Photomicrograph of sandstone from St. Modan's Parish Church, Rosneath, Dumbartonshire, Scotland |
Description: | The image is a photomicrograph of part of a thin section of sandstone viewed using a relatively low-power lens in order to show the grain structure and porosity characteristics of the rock. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number ED 7627. The sample is an excellent example of a typical sandstone which has been used as a building stone. It is composed mainly of grains of quartz (seen as white in thin section) which are generally rounded and of a uniform grain size. Most grains in the image are less than 0.3mm across. The sandstone has a relatively high proportion of pore space, as seen by the presence of blue dye resin which has been impregnated into the thin section. Despite the high porosity the grains are quite tightly held together, cemented by a natural silica cement. The areas of yellow-brown throughout the thin section are mainly carbonate which has been stained naturally by fine-grained iron oxide or organic material. Occasional clear highly elongate flakes of white mica (muscovite), are present throughout the thin section. |
