Caption: | Photomicrograph of sandstone from St. Modan's Parish Church, Rosneath, Dumbartonshire, Scotland |
Description: | The image is a photomicrograph of part of a thin section of sandstone viewed under a relatively high-power lens in order to highlight the different mineral components present in the rock. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number ED 7626. The sample is a quartz-rich sandstone with a relatively uniform composition and texture. Sedimentary bedding is defined in the thin section by the alignment of muscovite flakes and elongation of opaques. The sandstone has a grain size ranging from 0.05 to 0.2mm, and is well sorted and moderately well rounded. It has a fairly high porosity. The sample contains small patches of carbonate scattered throughout which infill the matrix porosity. The carbonate appears to have caused some corrosion of the framework grains. Some areas of the porosity are infilled by clusters of very fine-grained clay minerals which form random 'books' with a very low birefringence. In places the clay infill is coarser-grained and more micaceous. |
