Caption: | Photomicrograph of sandstone from Neilston Parish Church, Barrhead, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland |
Description: | The image is a photomicrograph of part of a thin section of sandstone showing the pore structure of the rock. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number ED 7625. The rock is a coarse-grained and gritty quartz-rich sandstone, with common polycrystalline grains. It has a grain size generally ranging between 0.5 and 0.8mm, with common grains as large as 1 to 1.8mm. The rock is not strongly compacted, with relatively thin quartz overgrowths resulting in an open porosity. Large areas of the porosity are infilled by clays; forming clusters of very fine-grained 'books' of clay with a very low birefringence. Some areas of clay are more crystalline and mica-like with a higher birefringence. Polycrystalline quartz grains contain a combination of quartz in various optical orientations within one grain. They are often thought to represent the result of erosion of a metamorphic source rock. |
