Caption: Photomicrograph of sandstone from Neilston Parish Church, Barrhead, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland
Description: The image is a photomicrograph of part of a thin section of sandstone viewed under a relatively high-power lens in order to identify the mineral species present. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number ED 7624. The grain size ranges from 0.2 to 0.5mm (some grains are as small as 0.05mm). The rock is moderately well sorted, with many well-rounded grains. It is not strongly compacted, with large pore spaces and high porosity. Patches of fine-grained clay are present throughout infilling areas of porosity, but these are a relatively minor component. Some of the clay appears to be directly associated with decayed detrital feldspar. The thin section was made from a masonry sample removed from the building during repairs. The stone is a uniform quartz-rich sandstone with a few thin bands (beds) of < 1cm thickness which have higher clay content.
