Caption: | Photomicrograph of sandstone from Neilston Parish Church, Barrhead, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland |
Description: | The image is a photomicrograph of part of a thin section of a very coarse-grained gritty quartz-rich sandstone. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number ED 7623. The sample is a coarse-grained, poorly-sorted `gritty? sandstone with a grain size generally 0.2-0.5mm, although some grains are as large as 1-2mm in size. Such a wide range of grain sizes is termed 'poorly sorted', although most grains are moderately well-rounded. Common large white patches of clay infill pore spaces, and the rock has orange ferruginous patches scattered throughout. The rock is not strongly compacted, with a relatively large porosity highlighted by the presence of blue dye resin. The sample contains rare relict detrital micas (possibly biotite or chlorite), and small patchy interstitial opaque iron oxide. |
