Caption: Photomicrograph of sandstone from Dalmeny Quarry, Queensferry, West Lothian, Scotland
Description: The image is a photomicrograph of part of a thin section of Dalmeny sandstone. The specimen is of Carboniferous age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number ED 7369. This detailed image of a sandstone shows quartz and feldspar grains which have very ragged margins, suggesting that they have undergone corrosion. This process can occur when a fluid phase passes through the pore spaces and reacts with the framework sandstone grains. The result is a highly porous sandstone which may be weakly cemented. This type of induced pore structure is known as 'secondary porosity'. As well as quartz and feldspar grains, (which appear white in thin section) the sandstone has rare micas which are deformed and altered, and appear as elongate bent flakes with a rather speckled texture. The stone also contains distinctive iron oxides, which appear as opaque black patches locally infilling pore spaces.
