Caption: | Photomicrograph of sandstone from Clackmannan Tower, Clackmannanshire, Scotland |
Description: | The image is a photomicrograph of part of a thin section of a sandstone masonry block from the historic Clackmannan Tower. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number ED 7618. The stone is a quartz-rich sandstone composed of abundant small white quartz sand grains. The sandstone is crossed by several thin parallel bands containing opaque black iron oxides and pale yellow micas. These bands represent original sedimentary bedding planes in the rock. The thin section was made to identify the type of sandstone used in the historic monument in order to identify an appropriate matching sandstone suitable for undertaking repairs. |
