Description: | Oblique aerial view of Holborn Head and Scrabster, Caithness. View to the west-south-west. The strata in this area, which dip gently to the north-west are made up of lacustrine, uniformly-bedded, rhythmic cycles of laminated carbon-rich siltstones and shales with subordinate fine-grained sandstones. They belong to the Latheron Subgroup of the Upper Caithness Flagstone Group, which is part of the LStrathy Bay, Sutherland. Middle Old Red Sandstone. A number of geos on the eastern side of Holborn Head have formed due to exploitation of weaknesses created by numerous north-west trending minor faults and fractures. Blowholes and a large clett (stack) can also be seen. The fishing and ferry port of Scrabster is located in Thurso Bay, 1 kilometre south-west of Holborn Head. |
