Description: Oblique aerial view of Holborn Head, western side of Thurso Bay, Caithness. View to the west. The strata in the cliffs are lacustrine uniformly-bedded, almost horizontal rhythmic cycles of laminated carbon-rich siltstones and shales with subordinate fine-grained sandstones. They belong to the Latheron Subgroup of the Upper Caithness Flagstone Group which is part of the Middle Old Red Sandstone. Several deep incisive geos can be seen, the result of exploitation of weaknesses due to small north-west trending vertical faults in the cliffs and just beyond the geo heads, elongate blow holes are also observed. In the middle distance stands a clett, or stack, which is the result of the collapse of a natural arch. The area is covered with a shelly boulder clay deposited by a glacier flowing north-west from Moray Firth.
