Description: Oblique aerial view of Geodh nam Fitheach, Caithness. View to the south-east. The strata in this area, 2 kilometres north-east of Dounreay, dip at about 10 degrees to the west-north-west: this can best be seen in the wave-cut platform. The rocks, in the Latheron Subgroup of the Upper Caithness Flagstone Group of the Middle Old Red Sandstone, are made up of successive uniform beds of lacustrine shale, siltstone and fine-grained sandstone. The 'flaggy' character of the rock shows up well: weathering along bedding planes has created the wave-cut platform and exploitation of vertical joints and fractures has resulted in the long narrow geo of Geodh nam Fitheach. When combined, these actions have created the typical flagstone appearance. The strata have been capped by a shelly boulder clay which probably originated in the Moray Firth.
