Description: | Oblique aerial view of Geodh na Moine and Loch na Moine, 1 km. east of Red Point, Caithness. View to the south-west. The strata at this locality are lacustrine, uniformly-bedded rhythmic cycles of laminated carbon-rich siltstones and shales with subordinate fine-grained and thinly-bedded sandstones dipping 10 degrees north-north-east and 15 degrees north-north-west to the west and east of the geo respectively, and are part of the Latheron Subgroup in the Upper Caithness Flagstone Group of the Middle Old Red Sandstone. The geo of Geodh na Moine has been formed by the exploitation of a south-west trending fault and a number of small caves can be seen at the base of the cliffs, which have also been undercut as a result of wave action. Resting on top of the cliffs is boulder clay which commonly contains schists and granite, suggesting a west or south-western origin. |
