Caption: Photomicrograph of crenulated semipelitic schist. Light: XPL, Magnification x 2. Allt a' Choire, 30 metres west of junction with River Livet, Tomnavoulin, Aberdeenshire.
Description: The image shows a photomicrograph of a crenulated semipelitic schist, taken under crossed-polarized light to highlight the different mineral types in the rock. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number S 75752. Light: XPL, Magnification x 2. Light: XPL, Magnification x 2. The brightly-coloured mineral which dominates the rock is muscovite mica. It forms small elongate flakes which are aligned in a series of parallel folds or crenulations. The other main mineral phases in the rock are quartz and feldspar, which have a more granular shape and variable grey birefringence colours. A crenulation is a small-scale folding with a wavelength of up to a few millimetres that is generally associated with larger-scale folds. Crenulations are commonly associated with the development of planes of cleavage in a rock.
