Description: | The image shows a photomicrograph of a thin section under crossed-polarized light. It is a metamorphosed sandstone, composed primarily of abundant small grains of quartz and feldspar within a micaceous and iron-rich matrix. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number S 98583. Light: XPL, Magnification x 2. Light: XPL, Magnification x 2. The presence of relatively coarse-grained micas in the matrix suggests that these have grown during low-grade metamorphism. Rocks of the Highland Border Complex from which this specimen is derived range in age from the Lower Cambrian to the Ordovician. The rocks themselves are a distinctive mix of igneous, meta-igneous and sedimentary rocks quite distinctive from the main Dalradian succession. They were originally referred to as the Highland Border Series in 1901 by George Barrow. Their stratigraphy, structure, metamorphism and tectonic setting have been in constant scientific debate ever since. |
