Caption: Photomicrograph of limestone. Light: PPL, Magnification x 2. 300 m. 265 degrees from Dunardry Cottage, Aberfoyle, Perthshire.
Description: The image is a photomicrograph of a thin section of limestone from the Grampian Highlands of Scotland. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number S 98574. Light: PPL, Magnification x 2. Light: PPL, Magnification x 2. The rock has a number of carbonate components which belong to different generations of crystallization and mineral growth. The lighter-coloured highly fractured area appears to be an earlier generation of limestone which has become altered and veined by a slightly darker second generation of carbonate. Petrography is the use of thin sections to describe and classify rocks and understand their formation. It is one of the most fundamental and valuable tools available to the geologist. Rocks are cut and ground into thin slices which are only about the thickness of a cigarette paper, and mounted between glass slides. They are then viewed under a petrological microscope which has a special series of lenses to enable the different mineral species to be distinguished and identified.
