Caption: Photomicrograph of granite in contact with schist. Light: XPL, Magnification x 2. Ard an Daraich, Ross of Mull, Argyllshire.
Description: The image is a photomicrograph of the contact between the Ross of Mull granite and the surrounding micaceous schists. The image has been captured using cross polarized light in order to highlight the different optical characteristics between the two rock types. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number ED 4346. Light: XPL, Magnification x 2. Light: XPL, Magnification x 2. The left-hand side of the image shows the typical low birefringence colours of quartz and feldspar in the granite. The right-hand side shows a mass of fine-grained laths of brightly coloured mica, typifying the schist rock. The Ross of Mull intrusion is one of the Newer Granites of the Caledonian Orogeny. The Newer Granites comprise a group of major plutons and some smaller masses all intruded later than the main metamorphic recrystallization and deformation of the surrounding schist but earlier than the deposition of the Old Red Sandstone. The Ross of Mull granite has been dated at c. 420 Ma. It has been quarried extensively and used as building stone.
