Caption: Photomicrograph of granite from Rubislaw Quarry, Aberdeenshire
Description: The image is a thin section of granite viewed under crossed-polarized light in order to distinguish between the different mineral components in the rock. The specimen is of Devonian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number ED 4343. The rock is dominated by interlocking equigranular crystals of quartz and feldspar, typified by interference colours showing a range of greys (from white to black). Smaller grains of biotite mica can be distinguished by their brightly coloured interference colours. Rubislaw Quarry is often regarded as the most famous of the Aberdeen granite quarries, supplying building and monumental stone since it opened in 1741. It quarries into the Aberdeen granite, one of the late-tectonic Caledonian granitic intrusions. It has been dated at c. 470 Ma.
