Caption: Photomicrograph of granite from Rubislaw Quarry, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Description: The image is a thin section of granite showing dominant pale-coloured minerals of quartz and feldspar, with common flakes of orange-brown biotite mica and small grains of opaque black iron and titanium oxide. The specimen is of Devonian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number ED 4343. The granite has a uniform texture with no preferred alignment of minerals, or fabric. This uniformity and the interlocking nature of the grains gives the rock great strength and durability as a building stone. The Aberdeen granite is one of the late-tectonic Caledonian granitic intrusions. It has been dated at c. 470 Ma. The Aberdeen and nearby Kemnay granites are grey foliated biotite-muscovite-granites. Contact with the Dalradian country rocks are gradational passing through a zone containing partly digested xenoliths into country rock that has previously suffered regional migmatization.
