Description: | The image shows a highly sheared semipelitic rock illustrated as a photomicrograph under crossed-polarizing lenses. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number S 94048. Light: XPL, Magnification x 10. Light: XPL, Magnification x 10. The image is dominated by two large quartz grains which sit within a much finer groundmass dominated by brightly coloured micaceous minerals. The intense streaky nature of the rock testifies to the fact that it has undergone intense deformation. Such textures are often described as 'mylonitic' and can be found in major zones of faulting and thrusting in the Earth's crust. This semi-pelite was found at the Elfhill Burn and is from the Southern Highland Group and is of Dalradian Supergroup (Precambrian) age. Semi-pelite is not the dominant rock type in this group, the typical rocks are poorly-sorted turbiditic metagreywackes. Preserved sedimentary structures indicate that deposition occurred in a series of major submarine fans on a subsiding continental shelf. The composition of the clasts indicates an erosional evolution of the north-western source area by stripping of a cover area to reveal a Lewisian basement. Palaeocurrent indicators show a dominant flow towards the south-east. |
