Caption: | Photomicrograph of grit. Light: XPL, Magnification x 2. West of Round Hill, south-west of Penpoint, near Thornhill, Dumfriesshire. |
Description: | The image is a photomicrograph of a grit taken using crossed polarizing lenses in order to discriminate between the different components present. The rock is a mixture of several mineral types including quartz, feldspar, mica, iron oxide and broken-down rock fragments or 'lithics'. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number S 94029. Light: XPL, Magnification x 2. Light: XPL, Magnification x 2. Mica is easily distinguished from the other components by having a brighter birefringence colour. This grit, found to the west of Round Hill, is part of the Gala Group, a series of Silurian coarse-grained greywackes, grits, flags, shales and conglomerates. The Gala Group is divided into three lithological formations, the Hawick Rocks, Queensbury Grits and the Abbotsford Flags. A graptolite fauna indicates an Upper Llandovery (Silurian) age. |
