Description: | The image shows part of a thin section of a grit from the Southern Uplands. It is composed of a mixture of mineral grains and rock fragments of different sizes, suspended within a fine grained muddy matrix. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number S 94029. Light: PPL, Magnification x 2. Light: PPL, Magnification x 2. The rock consists of a number of different types of grains. The abundant small angular white grains are mainly quartz and feldspar, whilst the large partially rounded brownish-grey grains are lithic fragments. Lithic fragments are derived from other rocks have been eroded. This specimen is part of the Gala Group, a series of medium to thick-bedded turbidites of quartzite and pyroxenous sandstones and coarse-grained greywackes and conglomerates. This specimen was found within the Moniave Shear Zone. The rocks form thinning and fining-upward cycles and would have formed in a mid-fan channelled environment. The rock is Silurian in age. |
