Description: Grey to dark grey compact limestone composed of very fine-grained calcite with larger crinoid fossil debris. This specimen is Carboniferous Limestone Series in age. BGS Sample Number SL 183. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number S 40472. The thin section image shows a large round fragment of crinoid ossicle enclosed within a matrix of very fine-grained rounded and angular grains of calcite, 0.02-0.05 mm across. The matrix is cemented by calcite and clay. The fossil fragment and matrix have been cut by a planar fracture which appears to be infilled by semi-opaque brown bituminous material. Fragments of shell are common in the rock, and such crinoid columnals are scattered throughout. Small angular quartz grains, granules of pyrite and drops of bitumen are also present in the rock. In summary the sample is a very fine-grained limestone with a granular calcite matrix cemented by mud or clay, with common fossils scattered throughout.
