Caption: Mineral specimen of linarite. Leadhills, Lanarkshire.
Description: The photograph shows a detail of a rock sample containing the mineral linarite. This distinctive blue mineral is accompanied by orange brown secondary minerals of iron and greenish secondary copper minerals. Linarite is a relatively rare mineral in Scotland. British Geological Survey Petrology Mineral Collection sample number 15383. The Leadhills are is one of the most famous areas in Scotland for finding rare and precious minerals. It was also a major centre for lead mining and processing. Linarite, along with caledonite are two basic sulphates of lead and copper that have been found in many veins in the Leadhills area. Linarite and caledonite are usually found together often with chrysocolla and malachite. When the primary copper ore chalcopyrite occurs the percolation of surface waters causes oxidation and the formation of copper sulphate, when this unites with the products of oxidation of galena linarite or caledonite will form.
