Caption: Rock specimen of bauxitic fireclay. Saltcoats level, east side of Dalry road, 990 yards north of Saltcoats, Ayrshire, Scotland.
Description: The sample is a greyish brown, very fine-grained rock with a brittle, flinty texture. It contains abundant small elongate carbonaceous fragments which are probably fossil plant fragments. The rock will be upper Namurian (Carboniferous) in age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC4596. The term bauxitic refers to the aluminium-rich nature of the rock. The rock is technically a laterite, (a fossil soil horizon) formed by tropical weathering and decomposition of lavas in a moist tropical climate. The Ayrshire Bauxitic Clay deposits were used as an industrial mineral, for the manufacture of bricks for electric steel furnaces and other temperature-resistant materials required in the metals industry.
