| Description: | The sample is a sandstone containing the remains of part of a fossil tree. The imprint of the plant structure is preserved on the bedding surface, highlighted by the presence of black carbonaceous (coal) material formed from the decayed plant remains. The host sandstone is a fine to medium grained grey finely bedded rock with common white mica flakes, and containing abundant small carbonaceous fragments. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC2608. This fossil type is known as Stigmaria, thought to form part of the root system of Lycopod trees which were particularly prolific during the Upper Carboniferous. The detailed pits on the fossil surface are thought to represent the irregular spiral scars of small rootets. The Lycopods are a group of vascular plants with simple leaves. During Carboniferous times Lycopod trees such as Lepidodendrons grew up to about 100 feet tall. |
