Caption: | Rock specimen of quartz dolerite. Near Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland. |
Description: | The sample is a dark basic igneous rock with a medium to fine-grained texture, containing visible pale laths of plagioclase feldspar. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC2988. A dolerite is a medium-grained equivalent of a gabbro (coarse-grained) or a basalt (fine-grained), in that it is an igneous rock of basic composition. Dolerites mainly occur as dykes, sills or plugs, and commonly occur in swarms associated with a volcanic neck. In terms of chemical composition and mineral content dolerites, gabbros and basalts are identical. Quartz-dolerite has been intruded into the Carboniferous strata of Falkirk district both as sills and dykes, predominantly east-west to locally ENE trending. They form part of a major suite of high-level tholeiitic intrusions extending throughout Scotland and into the North Sea. Radiometric ages indicate an age of 302-297 Ma in age, late Carboniferous. |
