Caption: | Rock specimen of ophicalcite marble. Marble quarry, Glen Tilt, Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland. |
Description: | The rock is a pale greenish-white marble with a crystalline or sugary texture. It has a randomly coloured or mottled appearance due to the presence of patchy green-coloured areas. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC1533. An ophicalcite is a variety of marble which contains the olivine mineral forsterite which has been altered and replaced by the mineral serpentine. They typically have a distinct greenish mottled appearance, and are much valued as decorative stones. The metasedimentary rocks of Glen Tilt belong to the Dalradian Supergroup (Precambrian). They are intruded by a Caledonian igneous suite, called the Glen Tilt Complex, which contains mainly granitic rocks with sheets and dykes of microdiorite and quartz-porphyry. |
