Caption: Rock specimen of graphitic schist. Lagganauld, Inchrory, Tomintoul, Banffshire, Scotland.
Description: The sample is a fine-grained mica-rich rock, with a dark blue-grey colour typical of a graphite-bearing schist. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC1237. Graphite is a form of carbon, which occurs naturally as an element within the Earth's crust. In many cases it has formed from the degraded remains of organic material such as plant life. Graphitic schists are common in the Dalradian Supergroup (Precambrian) in the Tomintoul area.
