Caption: Rock specimen of parallel-banded Moine gneiss. River Tilt, 0.25 miles north of Auchghoul [?], Blair Castle, Perthshire, Scotland.
Description: The sample is a striking pale-pink or flesh-coloured rock which has a strong regular compositional banding. The rock consists of bands of pale alkali feldspar and quartz, interbanded with thin veins of dark grey quartz mantled by dark micas. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC1450. The sample is a typical siliceous gneiss of the Moine Supergroup of Scotland. Although it is has been metamorphosed, the regular banding may represent original sedimentary units of thin sandstone beds. The quartz veins have formed as a result of silica migration through the rock during metamorphism. The Moine rocks cover much of the Northern Highlands of Scotland. They are divided into three main stratigraphical divisions; the Morar, Loch Eil and Glenfinnan Groups.
