Caption: Rock specimen of 'crumpled' quartz schist. Granton-on-Spey, Elginshire, Scotland.
Description: The rock is compositionally banded with distinct layers of different composition and colour, which have been folded ('crumpled') in a rather irregular manner. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC1152. The paler bands in the sample contain more quartz and feldspar minerals, whilst the darker bands have more mafic minerals such as mica. The term crumpled is an old term used to describe a rock which contains folding or crenulation. It was commonly used by geologists during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The rock is Dalradian (Precambrian) age.
