Caption: Rock specimen of hornblende schist. Two miles north-north-east of Letterewe Pier, Loch Maree., Rosshire, Scotland.
Description: The sample is a relatively high grade metamorphic rock which has undergone severe deformation. It is dominated by two distinct compositional components, a pale-coloured feldspar-dominated layer and a dark hornblende-rich layer. The feldspar-rich band has been deformed into three distinct segments, each representing an individual fold hinge. These features show that the rock has been metamorphosed and deformed under intense temperature and pressure. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC228. The term hornblende is an old German word for any dark prismatic crystals which occur in metallic ore deposits, but are commercially worthless. The German word 'blende' means 'a deceiver'. Part of the Lewisian (Precambrian) Southern Laxfordian Belt. The rocks in the Loch Maree Group are highly metamorphosed and consist of thick basic sheets of hornblende, or hornblende-chlorite schists. The general trend of the foliation is NW-SE.
